Frequently Asked Questions
How do I create a new batch?
Tap the "+" button on the home screen. Enter your batch name, select the mead style (Traditional, Melomel, Cyser, etc.), enter the volume, choose your honey type and yeast, then input your Original Gravity (OG). The app will automatically generate a TOSNA nutrient schedule.
How do I log a gravity reading?
Open your batch, then tap "Log Gravity". Enter your current gravity reading using the number pad. The app will calculate your estimated ABV and show progress toward the 1/3 sugar break.
What is TOSNA and how does the calculator work?
TOSNA (Tailored Organic Staggered Nutrient Addition) is a nutrient schedule for mead. The app calculates Fermaid-O amounts based on your OG, batch volume, and yeast nitrogen requirements. Nutrients are added at 24h, 48h, 72h, and at the 1/3 sugar break.
What is the 1/3 sugar break?
The 1/3 break is when approximately 1/3 of the sugars have been fermented. It's calculated as: OG - ((OG - 1.000) / 3). This is the last point where you should add nutrients. The app automatically detects when you've reached this milestone.
How do I move my batch to the next phase?
On the batch detail screen, tap the phase transition button (e.g., "Move to Secondary"). The app will prompt you to confirm and may ask for a final gravity reading before transitioning.
What's the difference between Free and Pro?
- Free: Unlimited batches, basic tracking, gravity logs, ABV display, manual nutrient tracking.
- Pro ($9.99): TOSNA auto-calculation, 1/3 break detection with alerts, stuck fermentation detection, charts/graphs, aging reminders, unlimited photos, no ads.
Does the app work offline?
Yes! Mead Maker works 100% offline. No internet connection required. All your data is stored locally on your device.
Is my data backed up to the cloud?
No. All your data is stored only on your device. If you uninstall the app, your data will be deleted. We recommend keeping notes of important batches separately.
How do I remove ads?
Upgrade to Pro ($9.99 one-time purchase) in Settings. This permanently removes all ads and unlocks advanced features like TOSNA auto-calculation, charts, and aging reminders.
Troubleshooting
Notifications not working?
- Make sure notifications are enabled in your device settings (Settings > Apps > Mead Maker > Notifications).
- Check that you have Pro enabled for nutrient and aging reminders.
- Verify that your batch is in an active phase (Primary or Secondary).
TOSNA calculations seem off?
- The TOSNA calculator uses approximate formulas. Results are meant as a starting point.
- You can manually edit nutrient amounts after generation.
- Different honey types and yeast strains may require adjustments.
App crashing or freezing?
- Try restarting your device.
- Make sure you have the latest version of the app installed.
- If the problem persists, contact us at support@myquietspot.com.
Tips for Best Results
- Log gravity consistently: Regular readings help detect stuck fermentation early.
- Use a hydrometer: Refractometers require correction during active fermentation.
- Track temperature: Most yeast prefer 60-75F (15-24C).
- Be patient with aging: Mead often needs 6-12 months to reach its potential.
- Add tasting notes: Track how your mead evolves over time.
